Eye pain or ophthalmalgia is any discomfort or pain that occurs in or around the eye.
It can range from a mild irritation or scratchy feeling to severe, stabbing pain, and may involve one or both eyes.
Ocular pain – originates on the surface of the eye (e.g., cornea or conjunctiva).
Common causes: foreign body, corneal abrasion, conjunctivitis, dry eye, or contact lens irritation.
Orbital pain – originates deeper within or around the eye socket.
Common causes: glaucoma, optic neuritis, sinus infections, or orbital cellulitis.
Redness
Blurred vision
Light sensitivity (photophobia)
Tearing
Discharge
Headache or nausea (especially with severe causes like angle-closure glaucoma)
Sudden or severe pain
Pain with vision loss or changes
Trauma or chemical exposure
Associated headache, nausea, or neurological symptoms
Eye pain that does not improve with rest or eye drops
