Definition

Eye pain or ophthalmalgia is any discomfort or pain that occurs in or around the eye.

 

It can range from a mild irritation or scratchy feeling to severe, stabbing pain, and may involve one or both eyes.

Types of Eye Pain

  1. Ocular pain – originates on the surface of the eye (e.g., cornea or conjunctiva).

    • Common causes: foreign body, corneal abrasion, conjunctivitis, dry eye, or contact lens irritation.

  2. Orbital pain – originates deeper within or around the eye socket.

    • Common causes: glaucoma, optic neuritis, sinus infections, or orbital cellulitis.

Symptoms That May Accompany Eye Pain

  • Redness

  • Blurred vision

  • Light sensitivity (photophobia)

  • Tearing

  • Discharge

  • Headache or nausea (especially with severe causes like angle-closure glaucoma)

When to Seek Medical Attention

  • Sudden or severe pain

  • Pain with vision loss or changes

  • Trauma or chemical exposure

  • Associated headache, nausea, or neurological symptoms

  • Eye pain that does not improve with rest or eye drops
